The award was created by the Keldwyth Singers, a Lake District
choir founded in 1973 by the late Mr. Reg Griffiths. The choir performed throughout
Cumbria and sometimes further afield, usually by invitation and sometimes in
fund raising for some charitable causes. The choir did not charge a fee, but
invited donations towards the Award fund. The proceeds from their record/cassette
"Music in Grasmere Church", and in more recent times, individual
donations and the sale of tickets for the Award's Final competition enable the
award to continue helping young musicians from Cumbria.
Following Mr. Griffiths' death in 1989,
the choir was disbanded,
but it was felt that the Award, together with the support it gives to young,
talented musicians, should continue. The Award is now organised by a small committee- and supported
financially, as previously stated, through donations and ticket sales for the
Finals competition. This committee has also formed the Keldwyth Award Society to
allow and encourage interested individuals or groups, to donate annually to
support the aims and objectives of the Award.
